My Background and Experience

I believe my eclectic editorial background demonstrates a joy for engaging with new learning and a passion for communication and making human connection.

Prior to joining the American Society for Training and Development (1997-2009) to develop a book publishing program for the nonprofit organization, I launched a successful industry newsletter that reported on an emerging international quality management standard (ISO 9000). The newsletter, Quality Systems Update, launched in 1991, and the related products we subsequently developed quickly gained a solid reporting reputation with our audience of quality industry professionals and supporting professional organizations such as the American Society for Quality.

Eventually, we built the business to include a line of successful quality management books, an ISO 9000 registered company directory and a second newsletter reporting on the development of an international environmental management standard called ISO 14000. The quality newsletter and book line was acquired by McGraw-Hill Professional in 1995 where I took a position as Executive Editor charged with editorial management of the product line.

In addition to these learning experiences, I have:

Reported on U.S. defense spending policies (and the politics behind these policy priorities) for a respected defense policy magazine based in Washington, D.C.

Worked as a staff photographer for a variety of newspapers and magazines and as a freelance assignment photographer for Esquire, People, Fortune and other national and regional publications.

Wrote flying performance reviews for a West Coast aviation newspaper - I was an avid, licensed private pilot at the time.

Authored an acclaimed collection of candid photographs and personal essays called Images of the Southern Writer that featured some of the 20th century’s most celebrated Southern born writers including Tennessee Williams, Eudora Welty, Walker Percy, Cormac McCarthy, Erskine Caldwell, William Styron, Anne Tyler, and dozens of other celebrated and respected writers.
